More than twenty Olympic medal winners, mentors and further global sports figures have signed a statement demanding a halt to the death penalty of a champion boxer and instructor, who is on death row in Iran.

Escalating Global Anger

During growing international outrage over the country's expanding employment of the death penalty as a means of oppression, the strongly worded statement censures the Iranian regime's ruling to uphold the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The athlete, three decades old, from the city in the northeastern region, was arrested for taking part in countrywide demonstrations in two thousand nineteen and charged of supporting an dissident organization. He has spent five years in detention, where he has been tortured and held in seclusion.

Detention and Flawed Legal Process

The athlete was detained in March 2020. The accusations against him comprised “causing deterioration on Earth through arson and damage of state assets”. His ruling has been annulled multiple times but on October 4 it was confirmed on the third attempt. His trial was denounced as “grossly unfair” by rights defenders and organizations.

Appeal to UN

The urging to halt the athlete's death sentence follows a earlier appeal to the global human rights chief for freedoms, endorsed by more than 100 rights specialists and groups, demanding intervention to avert the sports figure's capital punishment.

Execution Crisis

Based on reports, there is an “execution crisis in the country, which has achieved alarming proportions”. In 2023, officials sentenced at least 853 people – a 48% rise on the previous year. Last year, data showed nine hundred seventy-two capital punishments, constituting the maximum count since 2015. In excess of hundreds of people have been put to death so far in 2025.
